The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation (PMHF) is one of North America’s most successful social enterprises as measured by effectiveness and efficiency. PMHF is effective as we raise $1.3 million per employee and $70 million net fundraising revenue annually. Efficient, as we invest less than 10% in general fundraising and administrative expenses.

To understand the nature of the PMHF operations, one must look beyond our success as a fundraising organization, supporting The Princess Margaret, one of the world’s top 5 cancer research centres. To understand our operations is to understand our culture and our belief – that “We Are Canada’s Cancer Warriors”.

At the core of our organization is the vision “To Conquer Cancer In Our Lifetime”. Our bold vision statement is more than words on a page. It unifies all of our aspirations, activities, and ambitions.

PMHF is built on inspiration. We inspire thousands of people to support our vision and cause in tangible ways. Our success is built from a culture of belief we call our “Creed”. The Creed has been embraced by everyone from the basic discovery scientists to the security guards and from the junior accounting staff to our Board Chairman. Our vision, our ambition, our cause and our beliefs, are captured in the Creed.

As “Canada’s Cancer Warriors” our greatest collective and individual reward is found in having a specific, positive, impact on the lives of cancer patients. These intrinsic rewards are why we have a culture of inspiration and a Creed that drives our performance. We are committed, proud, and rewarded immensely by the work we do.

PMHF has a culture that drives globally important science and medicine at one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world. We are “Canada’s Cancer Warriors” and it is a privilege for us to pursue our vision and life’s work serving such an important cause.

Not just another not-for-profit…

Leadership practices at PMHF are based on the emerging field of social enterprise. Social enterprise leadership uses an inspired hybrid of private sector strategies, entrepreneurial practices, and cause-based energy for impact and sustainable success. This new model has driven performance, inspired a new culture and attracted and retained some of the best staff. We hire, train and promote on the basis of impact and leadership.

Our Foundation has more than doubled its fundraising from $33 million to $70 million net before investment income in the past six years. More importantly, PMHF has provided the vision and leadership to build very significant research institutes, which employ many of the world’s top research scientists like Dr. Tak Mak. We have spearheaded new models of patient-centred care like One-Day Rapid Diagnosis led by Dr. David McCready and new models of oncology nursing built around the De Souza Institute. It’s important to recognize that leadership and staff of PMHF were instrumental in creating, structuring, building and funding these important game-changing initiatives, which are having global impact.

The PMHF Values

We embrace five key values at PMHF:

First is PASSION for the Vision. These are the people who have either personally fought, or who have watched a loved one fighting for their life because of cancer.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP- We are constantly seeking new ways to grow revenue and engage new supporters. We balance risk with return and distinguish ourselves as social entrepreneurs.

PARTNERSHIP- As a world-class collaborator, we develop plan and fund diverse partnerships.

ACCOUNTABILITY- We measure and report our financial, scientific and medical impact to a broad community. We initiate and invite hundreds of supporters to meet us face-to-face regularly. Our donor impact and stewardship is transparent and specific.

SUSTAINABILITY- As long as cancer continues to take lives, we will be here. Our jobs will be finished when we conquer cancer.
