Impact on Research
History of The Weekend to End Breast Cancer
2006:
  • The fourth annual WEBC event was held Sept. 8-10, 2006.
  • A total of 5,382 walkers participated, helped by over 1000 crew and volunteers.
  • Walkers raised an average of $3,200 each, and covered 60 kilometres over 2 days in support of Princess Margaret Hospital and the Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research.
  • The event was a great success, raising $17.8 million for breast cancer research, treatment, and care at PMH.
  • A number of programs at PMH have been initiated by WEBC, supported by estimated net proceeds of $13.3 million raised during WEBC 2006.

    These include:
    1. Continued support for the Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research and the cutting edge work of Dr. Tak Mak and his team.
    2. Enhancements to clinical support, such as a two-year commitment towards the purchase of an MRI machine specifically for breast imaging.
    3. Creation of a tumour bank in pathology for continued research on a number of fronts.
    4. A further $1 million to support the ongoing evolution of the world-class The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Survivorship Centre at PMH.
2005:
  • The third annual WEBC event took place on Sept. 9-11, 2005
  • A total of 4,889 walkers participated and about 1,000 crew and volunteers
  • Once again this event was the most successful fundraising event of its kind in the history of Canada raising a total of $16.4 million
  • Net proceeds estimated at $12.2 million are being used to support a number of programs at PMH initiated by the WEBC.

    These include:
    1. $15 million to date for The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research under the direction of Dr. Tak Mak, world leading scientist and $3 million to support the first ever The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Chair in Breast Cancer Research.
    2. The establishment of the first comprehensive Survivorship Clinic and Program in Canada called Walking Together, With, Through and Beyond.
    3. Enhancement of clinical support. For example, improved breast screening and rapid diagnosis; the purchase of much needed equipment, specifically a second digital mammography machine for breast imaging; and clinical research trials support.
    4. Redevelopment of the M. Lau Breast Centre, to incorporate The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Survivorship Centre; make better use of available space; and provide an improved environment for our patients.
2004:
  • The second annual WEBC was held Sept. 10-12, 2004
  • A total of 4,565 women and men participated
  • Walker registration closed on April 30, 2004
  • Once again this event was the most successful fundraising event in the history of Canada raising a total of $15.3 million.
  • Net proceeds of $10.7 million went to support breast cancer research, treatment and care at PMH.
2003:
  • 2003 was the inaugural event in Toronto, Sept. 19-21, 2003
  • More than 3,972 women and men participated
  • Each participant was required to raise a minimum of $2,000 and walked 60 kilometres to support Princess Margaret Hospital
  • More than 350 weekend volunteer crew and 1,000 other volunteers helped to make the event a success.
  • The support from men, women and children in the Toronto community was phenomenal.
  • The 2003 Weekend to End Breast Cancer was the most successful first-time fundraising event in Canadian history raising a total of $12.5 million.
  • Net proceeds of $8.5 million went to support breast cancer research, treatment and care at Princess Margaret Hospital.
