History of The Weekend to End Breast Cancer
2006:
- The fourth annual WEBC event was held Sept. 8-10, 2006.
- A total of 5,382 walkers participated, helped by over 1000 crew and volunteers.
- Walkers raised an average of $3,200 each, and covered 60 kilometres over 2 days in support of Princess Margaret Hospital and the Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research.
- The event was a great success, raising $17.8 million for breast cancer research, treatment, and care at PMH.
- A number of programs at PMH have been initiated by WEBC, supported by estimated net proceeds of $13.3 million raised during WEBC 2006.
These include:
- Continued support for the Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research and the cutting edge work of Dr. Tak Mak and his team.
- Enhancements to clinical support, such as a two-year commitment towards the purchase of an MRI machine specifically for breast imaging.
- Creation of a tumour bank in pathology for continued research on a number of fronts.
- A further $1 million to support the ongoing evolution of the world-class The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Survivorship Centre at PMH.
2005:
- The third annual WEBC event took place on Sept. 9-11, 2005
- A total of 4,889 walkers participated and about 1,000 crew and volunteers
- Once again this event was the most successful fundraising event of its kind in the history of Canada raising a total of $16.4 million
- Net proceeds estimated at $12.2 million are being used to support a number of programs at PMH initiated by the WEBC.
These include:
- $15 million to date for The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research under the direction of Dr. Tak Mak, world leading scientist and $3 million to support the first ever The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Chair in Breast Cancer Research.
- The establishment of the first comprehensive Survivorship Clinic and Program in Canada called Walking Together, With, Through and Beyond.
- Enhancement of clinical support. For example, improved breast screening and rapid diagnosis; the purchase of much needed equipment, specifically a second digital mammography machine for breast imaging; and clinical research trials support.
- Redevelopment of the M. Lau Breast Centre, to incorporate The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Survivorship Centre; make better use of available space; and provide an improved environment for our patients.
2004:
- The second annual WEBC was held Sept. 10-12, 2004
- A total of 4,565 women and men participated
- Walker registration closed on April 30, 2004
- Once again this event was the most successful fundraising event in the history of Canada raising a total of $15.3 million.
- Net proceeds of $10.7 million went to support breast cancer research, treatment and care at PMH.
2003:
- 2003 was the inaugural event in Toronto, Sept. 19-21, 2003
- More than 3,972 women and men participated
- Each participant was required to raise a minimum of $2,000 and walked 60 kilometres to support Princess Margaret Hospital
- More than 350 weekend volunteer crew and 1,000 other volunteers helped to make the event a success.
- The support from men, women and children in the Toronto community was phenomenal.
- The 2003 Weekend to End Breast Cancer was the most successful first-time fundraising event in Canadian history raising a total of $12.5 million.
- Net proceeds of $8.5 million went to support breast cancer research, treatment and care at Princess Margaret Hospital.
